Students Taking Action Now for Darfur (STAND)
STAND at Mt. Tabor began fifteen years ago when a group of teachers and student wanted to both educate others about the genocide occurring in Darfur, Sudan and also to advocate for the refugees fleeing from the violence. Our mission expanded as other genocides and human rights issues came to light in other regions such as Syria, the Congo, and Myanmar. We urge our community to learn from the past by having Holocaust survivors speak in our auditorium, and we advocate and donate to organizations that help refugees in our community and in displaced-persons camps in Sudan and Turkey. In the past fifteen years, we have raised over $31,000 to support displaced persons camps by digging wells and providing basic supplies for women and children. We also educate our community with movie nights where we present documentaries and other movies about issues relevant to our mission.
We are also a chapter of the national STAND movement. You can visit the national website here.
We hope you join us this year as we continue to educate, advocate, and donate to help our neighbors across the street and around the world.
